I was recently admitted to Boston College with a $41,000 scholarship! I am sure that without your support it would not have been possible!

Differences between the GMAT Focus and the New GRE: 2024-2025

A student choosing between the GMAT and the new GRE

Should you prepare for the GMAT or the New GRE now that Masters in Management and MBAs accept both exams? This article will help answer some of your questions.  In short though, many (but not all) people can do better on the GRE than they can on the GMAT.

Both the GMAT Focus and the Revised GRE

1)   Take about 2 hours

2)   Have regular five answer choice problem solving questions for the math section

3)   Have standard five answer reading comprehension questions

The Revised GRE

1)   The New GRE is cheaper (140€ vs. 300€ for the GMAT)

2)   Since the two exams changed at the beginning of 2024 we’ve seen that many students do better on the math section on the New GRE than they do on math section of the GMAT.  However, the GRE tests Geometry more than the GMAT does.

3)   To do well on the New GRE you will most likely need to have improve your vocabulary significantly. If you're good at memorizing vocabularly the GRE might be for you. Furthermore, French people have an advantage because many “difficult” English words come from French.

4)   The New GRE is adaptive only between sections and not between questions.  That is during the first verbal and math section you’ll receive easy, medium, and hard questions.  During your second verbal or math section all of the questions that you get will be easy, or medium, or hard depending on how well you did on the first section.

The GMAT Focus

1)   In order to do well on this exam you have to be able to read well and reason logically.  Reading is important on both exams, but about two thirds of the GMAT verbal section comes down to being able to use logic and read well, while only about one half of the GRE verbal section really comes down to reading ability and the other half of the GRE comes down to vocabulary.

2)   The GMAT has a section called Data Insights which generally takes people awhile to get used to as opposed to other questions types which are easier to do right from the beginning.

3)   The GMAT doesn’t have a writing section whereas the GRE has a thirty-minute writing assessment. The writing section isn’t too big of a deal though for most students since you can learn a template and because the writing section is graded separately from the rest of the test.

4) The GMAT is the test taken by most students applying to business schools, but programs generally don’t have a preference between the two exams.
