How do I translate my GRE composite score into a percentile score?
The GRE score reports don't publish what your overall percentile rank is. However, we can use a statistic given on the ETS website to calculate your composite percentile!
The ETS website tells us the average GRE score is 1050 with a 190 standard deviation.
In other words, if you score 1050, it's around 50%
Using a simple normal distribution, you can calculate:
GRE total score --> composite percentile
1100 = 61%
1150 = 70%
1200 = 79%
1250 = 85%
1300 = 91%
1350 = 95%
1400 = 97%
1450 = 98%
1500+ = 99%
If you haven't taken the test yet and you want to know what score you have to get to be in a certain percentile here are two more charts. Here the mean for the math section was a 586 with a standard deviation of 152, and the mean for the verbal section was 457 with a standard deviation of 121.
